Ecotourism Tips:
Checklist for Wowza Travel
Starts with Heart

Our ecotourism tips--from how to plan a tour, to safety, to what to bring--take all the anxiety out of prepping for a new adventure. We make wowza ecotravel easy.

Traveling green is like traveling with magic sunglasses--you see and experience your journey with new eyes. The world you discover along the way becomes an unexpectedly enriching treasure. Best of all, ecotravel can be a priceless experience without being pricey.

But first, let us paint a picture for you of what ecotourism is, how it differs from conventional travel, and its amazing payoffs.

Ecotourism: The Gift That Never Stops Giving

So what are the benefits of being an ecotourist, and how do we travel differently? As green travelers, we are privileged to experience an authentic slice of life from a world we would never otherwise know. We learn more about ourselves in traveling so intimately connected with local cultures than years of conventional travel could ever teach. But the gift works both ways. By supporting local peoples through ecotourism, we literally give the gift of life, preserving a culture's present and past. With the ecotourism tips we offer below, you can create win-win trips every time you travel.

The big picture definition is that responsible travelers respect, interact with, and learn about the natural environs and the local people in ways that preserve and honor their indigenous community and environment.

Specifically, green travelers build positive relationships with their choices and interactions.

Ecotourism Tips: How to Travel Green

Our tried and true ecotourism tips can help you enjoy your vacation to the max!

• Learn about the people and the cultures of a destination before you visit. Respecting tradition, customs, even learning a few words in the local language will go a long way in creating bonds and experiences you will carry with you for a lifetime. For example, it is not simply polite to ask locals before taking their photograph, it is necessary, for in some cultures having your picture taken is seen as having your soul stolen.

• Become immersed in a culture by supporting local economies--eat their foods, purchase their crafts or art, stay in their lodging, hire locals as guides--locals, after all, are the experts and the best guides you could want to teach you their unique history, culture, traditions, superstitions, cuisine, struggles, dreams... you name it. And pay fairly for all goods and services.

• Be mindful of conservation: do not purchase any goods made from or services jeopardizing endangered species or ancient artifacts. These treasures belong to the country and its people. They are not there for tourists to take home as knick-knacks.

• Respect the environment and leave as small a footprint as possible: do not litter or otherwise damage historical sites or natural preserves. Also, be mindful of resources and be frugal with those that are in short supply. For example, we may be accustomed to daily long hot showers. But when we're traveling in areas where water is scarce, it's time to use a wet wipe in lieu of bathing. And then the used wipe needs to be properly disposed of--this may require disposal at a later time.

• Through your travel choices, support organizations at home and abroad that protect and preserve natural and cultural resources and that promote the rights of local workers.

• Share your culture when you travel, but don't impose it. Sharing treats from home with local children is an excellent way to foster goodwill and amazing relationships. Instead of sharing treats like candy, which can cause more harm than good (compromising dental care and nutrition), bring gifts that are useful and educational like pencils and postcards.
