Canada Ecotourism: North America's Green Wonderland
The second largest country in the world, by total area, Canada ecotourism opportunities are ripe, rich and resplendent. An Iroquoi word for village or settlement, Canada's settlement spans from Atlantic to Pacific Oceans, bounded to the south by the United States and to the north by the Arctic Ocean. In between lie ten provinces and three territories. In western Canada are
British Columbia,
Alberta, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan. Northern Canada includes the Northwest Territories, the Yukon, and Nunavut. Central Canada is Quebec and Ontario, and Atlantic Canada is New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Labrador and Newfoundland.
Throughout Canada, the arts, culture and heritage of the native or aboriginal people offer a rich experience for ecotourists. This totem pole is typical of the art along the Pacific Northwest coast.
Ecotourism Alberta
Dubbed Canada's Rocky Mountain playground, Alberta offers green adventurers dog sledding, skiing, snowshoeing, year-round fishing from spring-fed creeks, national parks galore for hiking, trekking and camping to your heart's content. The ranches and farmlands near Edmonton give a great immersion in local and traditional cuisine. Agritourism is abundant--you can holiday on a working farm or just learn to milk a cow. And one of the special cultural draws to Alberta is its present-day and historic aboriginal and First Nation heritage, that comes alive in interactive experiences, museums, and camps.
Ecotourism New Brunswick
New Brunswick has green travel fun for every season--from fairly warm ocean water to dip your toes in over the summer, to ice skating and skiing in the winter and whale watching in between. And don't miss out on the unique Acadian culture and history if you are not in the adventuring mode.
Ecotourism Newfoundland and Labrador
If you have never seen a whale in the open water, come to Newfoundland Labrador. In the Atlantic waters, 22 species of whales, porpoises and dolphins frolic, and as many as 10,000 humpback whales breach within viewing distance from shore. Not to mention the myriad of landbound and avian wildlife and habitats, the skiing and snowshoeing, and the amazing iceberg viewing... this wild and friendly edge of the earth is stunning in very special ways.
Ecotourism Northwest Territories
Ever seen the Northern Lights? From September to April, the Aurora Borealis creates a spectacular backdrop to your visit. Eco and sustainable tourism opportunities are abundant here. Most residents embrace those principles as a way of life. So as visitors, it isn't a stretch to enjoy green adventures among the arctic fjords, national parks, wildlife sanctuaries, and deep forests.
Ecotourism Nova Scotia
Nova Scotia has an amazing network of trails that allow exploration of wildlife as much as culture and history. Historic seaports, lighthouses, sea captains' houses, the world's highest tides, bald eagle breeding areas, whales, museums, and gorgeous natural habitats can keep you busy with something new to see every day.
Ecotourism Quebec
By foot, by canoe, or by seaplane, you can access some of the most spectacular wilderness, once inhabited only by caribou, deer, bears and the occasional fur trader. Quebec ranges over a variety of terrain and adventure possibilities, from the bird sanctuaries and lighthouses along the St. Lawrence river, to the snowy slopes near Montreal and Quebec City, to the urban sanctuaries like Quebec City, rich in culture, cuisine, and history, Quebec offers excitement for every taste and tastebud.
